Sardar Mohammad lqbal,
Ombudsman of Pakistan
Islamabad
PAKISTAN

Dear Mr. Iqbal,

I was married in Chitral, Pakistan, in a manner fully in accord with Islamic customs and rules on February 21, 1980. The name of my wife was Honzagool. Among the witnesses to this marriage were some of the most important and prominent persons in the area.

Unfortunately, one of the conditions to this marriage was that a cousin of my new wife, one Aziz-ur-Rehman, would accompany us to America, at my expense. Once arrived in America, this Aziz-ur-Rehman insisted on living with us in our marital residence. He proceeded to make constant troubles with me and my wife. Later, another person named Raja Ehsan Aziz, who now calls himself "Professor Ehsan Aziz" involved himself in trying to separate me from my wife.

The resulting story is a long one, but after two and a half years of constant struggle, Aziz-ur-Rehman was put in jail and subsequently deported to Pakistan, after being linked to a variety of criminal activities. Honzagool followed him one month later, leaving behind our daughter, Shamema, with me.

In the five years which have since passed, we have not received any communication whatever from Honzagool. I have written many letters and even journeyed to Pakistan in an effort to locate her and to settle this problem. Suffice it to say that my entire life for the past seven years since almost the very date of this marriage has been consumed with efforts to resolve this conflict with Aziz-ur-Rehman and Raja Ehsan Aziz in a lawful and proper way. Meanwhile, these two have made repeated threats against me and my daughter.

At this moment, I have a close friend in Pakistan who is searching for Honzagool. He has been unable to find her, even though he is from a neighbouring village In Chitral and he has been to both Chitral and Islamabad searching for her.

The rumour is that my wife has been "married" to another man who is a close personal friend of Raja Ehsan Aziz. This "marriage" is, of course, illegal, as Honzagool is still my wife.

Frankly, I cannot and do not believe that she is acting voluntarily in all of this. I think she is effectively being held prisoner Raja Ehsan Aziz. How else is it possible to explain the fact she has expressed no interest in her daughter for the past five years ?

I ask you to help me in the following ways

1. Locate Honzagool and determine the circumstances in which she is living. (To locate her, it is merely necessary to locate Raja Ehsan Aziz, who is always running around Islamabad and Rawalpindi, submitting petitions and applications supposedly on her behalf).

2. Arrange at least a telephone call between my daughter, Shamema, and her mother, Honzagool.

3. Determine if it is possible to return Honzagool to me as my wife.

4. Arrange for the Investigation and possible prosecution with regard to the criminal activities which have apparently been engaged in by Raja Ehsan Aziz.

Any help along these and similar lines would be greatly appreciated by both me and my daughter. I want you to know that I have the full support of all of the prominent people of Chitral in this matter, including the support of Prince Mohay-ud-Din, the District Council Chairman of Chitral. Even these prominent people can do little in Islamabad, however.

Very truly yours,

Mohd. Ismail Sloan
