Chess Is Her Passion and, She Declares, So Is Bobby-San

August 20, 2004 By JAMES BROOKE

TOKYO, Aug. 19 - Miyoko Watai, the freshly minted fiancée of Bobby Fischer, the imprisoned American chess master, admitted Thursday that he might be using her as "a pawn" in an effort to counter the Japanese authorities' opening move.

"I could be a sacrifice pawn," conceded Ms. Watai, 59, the acting president of the Japan Chess Association. She had put on an orange flowered print dress to meet reporters and explain Tuesday's sudden faxed statement that she and Mr. Fischer, 61, were in love and wanted to marry.

"But in chess there is such a thing as pawn promotion, where a pawn can become a queen," said Ms. Watai, four times women's chess champion in Japan. Breaking into a smile, she vowed: "Bobby-san is my king, and I will become his queen. We want to win the game by joining hands."

Only last week, Metropolis, a Tokyo magazine, investigated Mr. Fischer's peripatetic life in Tokyo and concluded that he lived in Japan Chess Association "housing." But on Thursday, "housing" was elevated to the cozy domesticity of a common-law marriage.

"It was a de facto marriage,'' said Masako Suzuki, Mr. Fischer's immigration lawyer. "We are now making it a legal marriage,'' adding, "I have never seen a case where there is this passion and devotion."

But the couple's wedding plans may be checkmated by Japanese demands that he have a valid passport.

The United States ordered the revocation of Mr. Fischer's passport last December, and he was detained on July 13 as he tried to fly from Tokyo to Manila. His lawyer said Thursday that Mr. Fischer, who is being held at an immigration detention center in Tokyo, had learned that his passport had been revoked only when he tried to board the flight.

According to a letter drawn up last Dec. 11 by the American consul in Manila, Mr. Fischer's passport was revoked because of a 1992 warrant for his arrest on charges of violating a trade embargo on Yugoslavia.

In 1992, Mr. Fischer earned $3.3 million by beating Boris Spassky in a chess rematch in Belgrade of their famous cold war duel in Iceland. In that first match, in 1972, Mr. Fischer became a national hero by breaking the Soviet grip on world chess and becoming the first American chess champion in over a century.

But in subsequent decades, Mr. Fischer became an eccentric and bitter recluse, shuttling between here and the Philippines, where he made a string of anti-American and anti-Semitic remarks to radio stations. Today, he is seeking German citizenship, a claim based on the German citizenship of his late father. But complicating this petition, Mr. Fischer's Web site denies the Holocaust, a stance that violates German law.

Two weeks ago, Mr. Fischer announced that he was renouncing his American citizenship. Immigration lawyers are divided over whether stateless status, German citizenship or marriage to a Japanese citizen are sufficient to stave off extradition to the United States for trial.

Aurangzeb Pronounced As: ôrngzeb or Aurangzib -zib , 1618-1707, Mughal emperor of India (1658-1707), son and successor of Shah Jahan. He served (1636-44, 1653-58) as viceroy of the Deccan but was constantly at odds with his father and his eldest brother, Dara Shikoh, the heir apparent. When Shah Jahan fell ill in 1658, Aurangzeb seized the opportunity to fight and defeat Dara and two other brothers in a battle for succession. He imprisoned his father for life and ascended the throne at Agra with the reign title Alamgir [world-shaker]. A scholarly, austere man, devoted to Islam, he persecuted the Hindus, destroying their temples and monuments. He executed the guru of the Sikhs (see Sikhism) when he refused to embrace Islam. Although the Mughal empire reached its greatest extent under Aurangzeb, it was also fatally weakened by revolts of the Sikhs, Rajputs, and Jats in the north and the rebellion of the Marathas in the Deccan. From 1682, Aurangzeb concentrated all his energies on crushing the Marathas, but his costly campaigns were only temporarily successful and further weakened his authority in the north. The Mughal empire fell apart soon after his death.
