He is one of the youngest veterans of the Civil War, having served with Sherman as one of the Sheepskin Battery, from Chattanooga, Tenn., through Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia to the Grand Review in Washington, D.C. Was honorably discharged from U.S. service in August, 1865. Referring the voters to a satisfactory and creditable painstaking record of over 3 years in the responsible position of Probate Judge, he is justified from his record of service in asking the people for reelection as Probate Judge.

Another Veteran is Gone

Jas. Dougherty, 83, Civil War Veteran, died at his home in Natoma yesterday forenoon, Dec 12, about nine a.m. following a long illness. His heart suddenly ceased functioning, bring death at a time when it was not expected. Funeral services are to be conducted this afternoon at two o'clock at Codell by Rev. Givinn, pastor there, and burial will be in Shiloh cemetery. His wife died four years ago. He has six living children. The deceased enlisted in 1862 in Co. B 111 volunteer Illinois Infantry, as drummer boy, and served until the close of the war. He came to Rooks County in 1885, living there continuously until moving to Natoma eleven years ago. He served three terms as probate judge of Rooks County. Mr. Dougherty was a gentleman in every sense of the word, and had the love and respect of not only his family but the community at large. His going takes another pioneer and veteran of the fast diminishing band of such men and women from our midst.

Jas. Dougherty Died Yesterday Morning was a Former Probate Judge of this County

A telephone call from Codell yesterday announced the death of James G. Dougherty at his home in Natoma, at 9:30 o'clock that morning. It is said that he had been in poor state of health for some time.

Mr. Dougherty was a former probate judge for three terms. He retired from office in January, 1913, being succeeded by Wm. Adams.

He had held his residence at Codell until four or five years ago when he moved to Natoma. He leaves a family of several children.

DEATHS

James Dougherty, son of John and Susan Dougherty was born October 31, 1845 in New York City. After the death of their parents, he, together with a brother and sister, now deceased, went to Illinois. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. B. 111th Regiment of Illinois volunteers and served as a drummer boy until the close of the Civil War.

January 13, 1868 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Martha Coulter Mc- Millen. To this union were born eight children, Charles, William, Louis, Frank, Isabel, Alice, Mary and Ernest. William and Frank preceded him in death, also Alice who died in infancy.

His wife died August 8th, 1924. The others, with a step daughter, Mrs. May Smith survive him together with many grand children and great grandchildren.

He came to Rooks County in 1885 and 1906 he moved to Stockton, Kansas where he served as probate judge for six years. He then moved to Codell, where he lived two years, then to Natoma where he has lived eleven years, departing this life on the morning of December 12, 1928.

PIONEER PASSED AWAY

Mrs. A.T. Brewer, whose critical illness was told in this paper one week ago, departed this life at 1:30 o'clock, Sunday afternoon, in her seventieth year. She was born in Owensboro, Daviess county, Kentucky in 1842. Her parents were slave owners, typical southerners, and she was reared a lady. Her father, Judge Triplett, served for 20 years as district judge of Daviess county.

ONE OF THE ARGONAUTS.

In 1868, lured by the lustrous fame of the California gold excitement, she sailed around Cape Horn to the Golden Gate, and has lived in the west ever since. She was a pioneer not only of California, but also of Nevada, Idaho and Montana. She was at Virginia City during the great Comstock excitement, and has witnessed the palmy days of many western mining camps. She has resided in Salmon and vicinity for the past twenty years.

She was the mother of ten children, three boys and seven girls. Five of them survive her. Mrs. Brewer was a good kind heart, a wholesome, benevolent character, who was always doing a Christian act whenever opportunity offered. She was widely known and universally well respected. Her death marks the passing of a notable person.
