From family records, it appears that Gershom Flagg was an architect byprofession. He was employed at the rebuilding of Fort Richmond on theKennebec in 1740, and went with Governor Pownal to the Penobscot in 1759,as a contractor in constructing Fort Pownal. He was a proprietor in thePlymouth Company, and lands in Augusta, Me., were assigned to him in thedistribution. On the lot in Agusta a compact part of the city wasafterwards built. The lands on the kennebee developed enough in islifetime to make him wealthy for the times. It is to be inferred that hewas a freemason, from the squares and compasses on the head-stone of hisgrave in the Granary Buryingground in Boston. At the time of his death hehad large possessions in real estate in Boston, including a homestead ofmany acres, with extensive gardens, richly cultivated. This was his homeuntil a short time before his death, when he removed with his family tothe town of Harvard, in order to be out of the way of danger to them whenthe anticipated hostilities between this and the mother country shouldbreak out. In Harvard he occupied the house belonging to Henry Bromfield,Esq. This house is described by Dr. Slade, in his account of theBromfield family, as "situated amidst avenues of lofty elms, of venerableappearance, with gambrel roof, and quaint chimneys, suggestive of homecomforts."

Hannah Pitson [Parents] was born in 1711 in England. She died on 13 Oct 1784. She married Gershom Flagg on 4 Jan 1736/1737 in Boston.

John Flagg [Parents] was born on 26 May 1673 in Woburn, MA. He died about 19 Dec 1732 in Boston. He married Albia Kornic before 1700 in Woburn, MA. John signed a will on 19 Dec 1732 in Probate.

He moved to Boston about 1700. In 1717 he owned an estate on HanoverStreet, Boston, where the American House now stands. He married AbiahKornic, a native of England. They were the parents of nine children.Their third child was Eleazer Flagg, who was the grandfather of the twosoldier boys of '76, Ebenezer and Gershom. Their seventh child was theEbenezer Flagg mentioned above as the owner of "Pompey", and thisEbenezer Flagg of Boston had a grandson Henry Collins Flagg Jr., ofNewport, R.I., whose granddaughter Alice Gwynne married CorneliusVanderbilt, mother of Cornelius and Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt.

Albia Kornic was born in 1676 in England. She died on 3 Sep 1715 in Boston, MA. She married John Flagg before 1700 in Woburn, MA.

Of Eleazer Flagg little is known; he was born in Boston Feb. 12, 1703,and at one time was an innkeeper there. In a deed dated 1740 we findEleazer Flagg mentioned as a "retailer" of Boston. He purchased fromDaniel Johnson and other heirs of Samuel Johnson deceased of LancasterNov. 24, 1740, a famous slate-quarry property, situated four miles N.E.of Lancaster Center, in the extreme north end of the town, not far fromthe Shirley line. In the words of Rev. Peter Whitney in his History ofWorcester Co., published in 1793, "this slate pit is fine and valuableand perhaps inexhaustable, furnishing slate and tiles for the roofs ofhouses, and most excellent stones for graves. This was first discoveredby Mr. Flagg. The slates have been in use for about 40 years. The quarryis now (1793) owned by Joseph Wales. No slates equal to these have yetbeen discovered on the Continent.

Eleazer Flagg was the grandfather of the two soldier boys of '76,Ebenezer and Gershom.
