Dirck Van Veghten was a man of large inherited wealth and socialconsideration, and endowed with unusual mentality. He inherited from hisfather over 2000 acres in Somerset County situated between the mountainand the Raritan river. Within this spacious plantation was his oldcolonial brick home, used during the Revolutionary war as General Green'sheadquarters, and stood a short distance southwest of the TT depot atFinderne -- over the old "Van Veghten Bridge", which stood about wherethe modern bridge over the Raritan river now stands. This colonial housewas the center of many incidents of the Revolution. Here Dirck and hisgenial spouse entertained Gen. George Washington. Here his leadingofficers were welcomed cordially; Here during the winter of 1778-79 anentire Division of the American army pitched its tents. Here hispossessions were offered freely for the sake of liberty. Here hispatriotism was of such a nature that he did not complain when themilitary forces took possession. Nor did he ever demand compensation forloss of his timber or other damage a large body of soldiers is bound toinflict. Here this country gentleman, Dirck Van Veghten, although in his80th year, hale, hearty and strong, exhibited his sterling wealth andgave a hearty hand to the cause of American patriotism.
