There were also many dogs -- she hadmany pets over the years and was very involved in the Animal RescueLeague in her Palm Beach years.

Tom had a zoo in back of the Cottage, whose inhabitants were chickens, ducks, white rabbits, guinea pigs, and two monkeys. One day we got intothe monkey pen, which we were not supposed to do, and came ot coveredwith fleas and horribly bitten. Aunt Virginia turned the hose on us.Later, these monkeys escaped aand were not seen for a long time, untilthe day Nervous, the little golf caddy, came tearing in to Staffordyelling, "Come quick - there are two tigers on the fence". Actually, itwas the monkeys, who had gotten that far away from the Cottage. From thatday on, they were never to be seen again. We had a hen sitting on a nestin the zoo, and one day went to see how things were progressing. Insteadof Mrs. Hen, a chicken snake was curled up on the nest. We could seebumps on his stomach and decided he had eaten the eggs. We killed thesnake, opened it up, and sure enough, there were the eggs unhurt. We putthem back in the nest, since they were not cracked and were still warm.We fooled the old hen, and were overjoyed when the eggs hatched. Theseare the things one does not learn in school.

The Airedale has been used as a police dog in France, Germany and
America. He has few equals as a watchdog as the following story from
Barbara Strebeigh illustrates:

Rafferty . . . drew invisible lines beyond which delivery men and others
were not allowed to move. If one came too close, Rafferty stood on his
lines and hopped up and down stiff-leggedly, sometimes adding a
ferocious roar for good measure. He never touched anyone in these
circumstances, and, to a man, no one ever challenged him. He dealt with
two or three intruders into the house with equal dispatch. He simply
launched himself at the person--in itself a terrifying experience--and
grabbed him by the hand, all the while rumbling savagely. Despite the
fact that he had such a firm hold on the hand that the intruder could
not escape unless he wanted to leave part of it behind, the skin was
broken in only one instance, and then only slightly.
