Edward H. Sloan was a US Marine who fought in the Invasion of Iwo Jima. He was a Captain in the Fifth Service Battalion. His name is listed on page 292 of the book THE SPEARHEAD, THE WORLD WAR II HISTORY OF THE 5TH MARINE DIVISION by Howard M. Conner, published by Infantry Journal Press, Washington DC in 1950.

After the war, Edward Sloan came back but almost immediately broke relations with his family and was last seen by them in 1946. Nobody ever knew what happened to him until the Social Security Death Index came out and showed that he had died in Iowa in 1978.

Even then, it almost seemed that he was concealing his identity, because he is listed in the Social Security Death Index only as E. Sloan, not as Edward Sloan. His family reports that on his death bed he was asked to reveal who his parents were and he refused to tell them.

He resided at 2675 Kenwood in Ottumwa, Iowa. He came to Ottumwa in 1946 because he was assigned to work there by a beer dirtributor. He was later manager of the Credit Bureau there for 25 years.

"I suspect that your uncle was an officer in the 5th Service Battalion, Captain Edward H. Sloan. I don't believe he received any decorations or awards, nor was he physically wounded in action.

" If you would like, I can provide you with his Unit Roster, which includes the names of some 47 officers and perhaps 891 enlisted men. these details are included in THE SPEARHEAD, THE WORLD WAR II HISTORY OF THE 5TH MARINE DIVISION. I think this gives you a pretty good handle for starters, or at least I hope so...

"For those who have an interest in Iwo, I highly recommend THE FIRST BATTALION OF THE 28TH MARINES ON IWO JIMA, by Robert E. Allen. Even though the primary focus is on the First Batallion of the 28th Marines, this is far and away the best day-by-day history that I have ever seen. It includes personal accounts and official reports, and complete muster rolls. If you want to know what Iwo was like, get your hands on this book.

"Another great book on this subject is IWO JIMA - LEGACY OF VALOR, by Bill D. Ross. Still another is THE BLOODY BATTLE FOR SURIBACHI, by Richard Wheeler, although it obviously focuses on only the first 4 or 5 days of a battle that last about 35-36 days.

"Best personal regards to all of you.
"Bill Grindell"
