Citizens Union makes Recommendations for the New York State Special Election

The Citizens Union has come out with its recommendations for the coming Special Election which will be held on February 12, 2002. The recommendations can be found on the Citizens Union website, which is at http://www.citizensunion.org/ .

Here is what it says about the race for the 56th New York State Assembly District, which encompasses primarily the Bedford Stuyvesant Section of Brooklyn:

"CITIZENS UNION'S PREFERENCE PROCESS

"This seat is open because former Assemblyman Al Vann stepped down to fill the City Council position previously held by term-limited Annette Robinson (Democrat, Independence). Now she is running for his old seat. Ms. Robinson is knowledgeable, with a wide range of interests on issues impacting on her district. While she is opposed to changing the governance of the citywide Board of Education, she thinks local school boards should not micromanage the business of their districts. She feels her greatest accomplishment on the council was bringing the police and the community together.

"Richard Taylor (Liberal) did not take stands on most policy issues. His major thrust is attacking incumbent elected officials who, he feels, have failed to serve the community.

"First-time candidate Sam Sloan (Libertarian) is an independent thinker who persuasively champions changes in public policy, such as abolishing rent control and eliminating the NYC income tax.

"Arthur Bramwell (Republican) declined to be interviewed by CU."
